A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

As students start their first assessments for 2025, I would like to share with you the importance that they maintain a growth mindset.
A growth mindset is a belief that intelligence and abilities can be developed through hard work and dedication. People with a growth mindset believe that they can improve their skills and knowledge with effort. They are also more likely to see challenges as opportunities to learn and grow.
As you support your child/ren with their studies can you please remind them of the importance of maintaining a growth mindset and seeking support/feedback from their teachers. It is equally important that they maintain healthy study habits, including their regular sleep routine.
Below is a simple visual that you may find useful in encouraging your child/ren throughout the upcoming assessment period.

Andrew Beattie

Senior School Welcome Breakfast
We celebrated the start of the year with a Senior School Welcome Breakfast. This was a wonderful opportunity for parents and carers to informally meet with teachers and to enjoy the surrounds at K Block Parklands. There was also plenty of Year 11 and 12 students who were able to fuel up before tackling the work that is ahead of them over the coming weeks. We look forward to many more opportunities throughout the year to celebrate with students and their successes.

Learning and Wellbeing
Seek Worthy Things
Students in Year 12 have been attending in-class seminars offered by our School Guidance Officers regarding QTAC applications and career planning. This is an important step in setting our students up for life post-school. Students have been using online provider ATOMI to set goals, revise study techniques, develop skills for learning and understand how to stay productive and look after themselves.
Students in Year 11 are undertaking a program to help them organise themselves for Senior Learning. They have met with Elevate presenters to assist them with their time management which can’t come soon enough with assignment drafts already due.
Getting students to prioritise homework and revision outside of school can be a challenge, so this session is designed to show parents how they can support their child in staying on top of their workload at home.
Register for the Elevate Parent Webinar Series This Term
Elevate Education delivers high-impact workshops to our students that help to develop their study skills, motivation, and exam preparation. Over the next term, you're invited to join their parent webinar series, where you can help support your child at home by reinforcing the skills they're learning at school.
Upcoming Webinars:
- 12 March 6:30-7:30pm (AEDT) - How You Can Make Technology an Ally (& Not the Enemy!)
- 26 March 6:30-7:30pm (AEDT) - How You Can Help Improve Your Child's Memory

AARA (Access and Reasonable Adjustments) Procedures
We encourage all students to time manage their assessment due dates with planners now available on OneSchool. Sometimes, however, students in Senior School may fall ill and need to apply for an AARA. If illness and misadventure impact on assessment dates, the following procedure should be followed. AARA application form for senior students is found on our school’s website.
Exams
- If unwell on the day of the exam – see your doctor and get a Medical Certificate dated on the day of the exam
- Complete the AARA application and attach your medical certificate
- Complete a comparable exam when you return to school
Assignments
- If away on the day your Assignment is due – email to your teacher
- If so unwell, your illness has hindered your progress – apply for an AARA
- Submit the application with a copy of your draft and a Medical Certificate
- Incomplete applications will be rejected
- More details can be found in the Mount Gravatt High Assessment Policy

MIDDLE SECONDARY SCHOOL

Ms Stacey Warwick
Head of Department - Middle Secondary | Business | International Student
Co-ordinator
A big few weeks to start the school year, particularly for our Year 9 students who are having their first task of elective subjects by choice. Current subjects in the Year 9 elective space include Business, Digital Technologies, Food Studies, Industrial Design and Technology, Japanese and HPE Extension. We hope the students are enjoying the opportunity to engage with these classes and help inform them of options they have when heading into the senior school in 2027.
For Year 10 students, Semester 1 marks the end of their compulsory journey engaging with the Australian Curriculum, and key curriculum areas. Through our SWT (Seek Worthy Things) program during coming weeks, Year 10s will have informative presentations conducted by our curriculum heads of department, focused on our Semester 2, pre-senior program choices. We also have a parent information evening schedule for early Term 2, our SET planning interviews and a visit to the Brisbane Career Expo.
Seek Worthy Things Year 9 program
The Year 9 focus for SWT this term is utilising a strategic national program to help support students think about their wellbeing and building skills in navigating the internet:
The YeS Project is workshop-based digital and social health program encouraging young people to act as positive leaders and supportive friends in social spaces, especially online. For more information about this project, please access the following website: The YeS Project

Year 10 Business Eat Street Excursion
Valentine’s Day was the setting for our Year 10 Business classes to venture to Eat Street Northshore after school. This excursion helps the students understand what it takes to run a market stall for paying customers. The students were fortunate to have a back-of-house presentation by staff at the venue and received numerous tips on how to woo customers. Thank you to the wonderful group of respectful, engaged and fun students and their dedicated teachers, Mrs Robotham and Mrs Wilson for organising the excursion.

Key date claimers for Year 9 and 10 students
- Year 9 NAPLAN Testing in Term 1, Week 7 (week beginning 10 March)
- Year 10 Curriculum Heads of Department subject talks for SET Plans (pre-senior program) in Term 1, Weeks 9 and 10
- Year 10 Subject Selection Information Evening (Year 10 into 11) in Term 2, Week 3 (Wednesday 7 March)
- Year 10 SET Plan interviews (pre-senior program) in Term 2, Week 4 (Friday 15 May)
- Year 10 Career Expo excursion in Term 2, Week 8 (Thursday, 12 June)
- Year 9 Camp in Term 3, Week 1 (Wednesday 16 July to Friday 18 July)
AARA Applications when absent for assessment
If a student is unable to attend school, due to illness or other circumstances beyond their control, they need to submit an AARA application to allow them further time to complete their assignments or sit a missed exam. Full details of the reason for absence are important to enable the AARA team to make a reasonable judgement on the reasons for absence. If you are able to obtain a medical certificate, it should be lodged with the application. With the assessment phase in full swing currently, and reports due to parents and carers at the end of term, there may be a need for an AARA to be completed. The application can be found on the school website under “Support and Resources” > “Forms and documents” > “Documents”. There is a specific application form for Years 7 – 10.

Hall Setup
We take great pride in fostering a sense of responsibility and service within our school community. As part of this, our Year 7 students are assigned to set up the hall for whole-school assemblies every alternate Monday. This helps instil teamwork, leadership and a commitment to our school environment. To ensure the hall is ready on time, students are required to arrive at the school Hall by 7:45am on their designated Monday.
Important to note: if a student arrives late or misses their assigned day without a valid reason (a note or email to Mrs Doyle from parent/guardian) other students will need to take on the extra workload. Instrumental music students who have lessons on a Monday morning will be excused from this responsibility.
Term 1 Roster
- Monday 10 March: 7J and 7M
- Monday 24 March: 7A and 7B

DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGIES

Mr Dan Hollis
Head of Department – Design & Technologies
In Year 11 Construction, students are making excellent progress on their mini wall frames, an essential skill-building exercise that lays the foundation for future projects. As they work through the process, they are developing their ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, measure and cut materials with precision, and construct walls that meet specific design requirements. They have also been introduced to the compound mitre saw and are becoming familiar with industry-specific terminology. The experience gained in this project will be crucial when they move on to framing and cladding a full-sized wall in Term 2.
Design students have also been working hard on their assessments, applying their creative and divergent thinking skills to a variety of challenges. From prototyping toasters to designing inclusive restaurant spaces, students in Years 11 and 12 have demonstrated strong problem-solving abilities and a keen eye for innovation. Their enthusiasm and commitment suggest that this will be a year of impressive work, and we look forward to seeing their final designs come to life.
The workshop has been buzzing with activity as students from Years 8 to 11 have begun their woodwork and metalwork projects. The level of craftsmanship on display so far has been outstanding, with students eager to refine their skills and produce high-quality pieces. The combination of creativity, precision, and hard work is setting the stage for an exciting year ahead.
Overall, the IDT Department has had a fantastic start to 2025. The engagement and enthusiasm from students have been inspiring, and their teachers are excited to see their skills and confidence grow as the year progresses.

Year 7 Humanities
Year 7s have been practicing their source analysis in the last couple of lessons in preparation for their assessment. In this task, they were given a series of sources. In groups they had to do a see, think, wonder and search for clues to answer a question.

Year 11 Geography
Unit 1: Topic 1 – Natural hazards
Year 11 Geography students were provided with edible learning experiences this week when they began studying the causes of natural hazards due to tectonic plate boundaries. Through the use of mini Mars bars, Mr Walsh was able to demonstrate what happens to the earth’s tectonic plates when they collide (convergent plate boundary), spread apart (a divergent plate boundary) or slide past one another (a transform plate boundary). Needless to say, the Year 11 students had fun determining the different types of plate boundaries, however, in the end they were all classified in the same way: a delicious snack!

Humanities – Upcoming excursions:

- 7 March 2025 – Year 12 Tourism – Movie World (Postponed)
- 11 March 2025 - Year 11 Legal Studies, Year 11 & 12 Cert IV Justice Studies - QEII Law Courts Precinct visit

SCIENCE

Head of Department - Science
Exploring the Wonders of Science: A Look Inside Our Year 7 Classroom
Our students have been busy diving into the exciting world of science! Over the past few weeks, they have engaged in hands-on activities and investigations that have deepened their understanding of key scientific concepts and essential laboratory skills.
One of the first lessons focused on the importance of safety in the science laboratory. Students explored the need for safety rules, ensuring they understand how to protect themselves and others while conducting experiments. This included learning how to properly handle equipment, wear protective gear, and respond to potential hazards.
Building on this foundation, students familiarized themselves with common laboratory apparatus, identifying each piece by name and understanding its specific use. From beakers to test tubes, they gained confidence in setting up and using essential scientific tools. They also honed their skills in creating 2D representations of scientific apparatus, a valuable skill for accurately recording experiments.
One of the highlights of our studies was the introduction to the Bunsen burner. Students learned about its components and how to operate it safely. After demonstrating their knowledge, they had the opportunity to safely ignite and use a Bunsen burner – receiving their BB licence!
To develop their scientific inquiry skills, students explored the scientific method. They practiced making predictions, carefully following procedures, and writing up their experiments. They also learned how to modify variables in an investigation, allowing them to observe changes and draw meaningful conclusions. Finally, they compared and interpreted the results of their investigations, refining their ability to analyse scientific data.
It has been an exciting journey of discovery and skill-building, and we are proud of the progress our students have made. Students will now use the skills they have learned to begin a unit of Chemistry: Separating Mixtures.

Valentines Day
The 14 February is always a special time, one of care, gratitude, and friendship. This year was particularly wonderful, filled with an abundance of appreciation notes, music, and roses-bearing Valentine Fairies. A huge thanks to Ms Money, Ms Rann, and the SRC for organising and operating these incredible activities to create a joyful atmosphere with heart-shaped painting and the selling of roses taking place on the Old Parade Ground. As it has been in the past, the roses and heart painting were a major success. Run by our outstanding SRC team, this year was one of our most popular yet, and after missing a year, the heart painting was a hit. We can’t wait for what next year and the rest of this year has to offer.

Year 7 Welcome Morning Tea
The Year 7 Welcome Morning Tea is a friendly lunchtime event designed to settle the nerves of the new students in their first term. It’s an excellent opportunity to connect with other classes and have a laugh. This year’s was a massive success, with extremely high attendance, and a fun atmosphere. The students were treated with fresh watermelon slices, cake, lamingtons, and cordial, served by our dedicated 2025 Senior Mentors, and facilitated by Ms March, Ms Doyle, and the Junior and Middle School Leaders. It was fantastic to see so many students stepping out of their comfort zones to create new friendships outside of their initial friendship circles.

Senior Morning Tea
The Senior Welcome Breakfast is intended to bring Year 11 and 12 students and their parents and carers together to meet and connect with their child’s teachers. It’s an excellent chance to build strong relationship foundations, meet new people, and celebrate the future of our seniors and reflect on their high school journey so far. The attendees were treated to a delightful assortment of foods ranging from muffins to pastries, and delicious yoghurt and fruit cups. Thank you to everyone who could make it, and a huge shout out to the wonderful canteen team for preparing a morning tea for everyone to enjoy.

EARLY DEPARTURE PROCEDURE
If you need your student/s to leave school before 2:40pm, please give them a note of explanation which is to be handed to Student Services before school. Parents will receive a SMS which they will need to reply to before students will be issued with a leave pass showing details of the leave time. This must be shown to their class teacher and then carried with them when they leave the school grounds. Due to school security, teachers cannot allow students to leave class without prior written approval.
CLUBS 2025
HOMEWORK GUIDELINES
Homework is a very valuable part of the learning process. In the less structured environment at home, students have the opportunity through focused activities to deepen knowledge, refine a range of skills and develop their thinking processes. Homework also enables time management and organisational skills to be developed.
A teacher at a state school may require a student of the school to complete homework. The school’s Principal decides what is a reasonable amount of homework for a student at each year level. In deciding what is reasonable, the principal takes into account the following guidelines as developed for the school under Section 427(2)(f) of the Education Act.

STUDENT WELLBEING

It’s hard to believe that we are already half way through the term! As a parent of teenagers and ‘emerging’ adults myself, I understand the value of communication and the partnerships between school and home. With this in mind, I wanted to draw your attention to a credible source of information and support. Have you heard that ReachOut, the country’s leading online mental health organisation for young people – has introduced a free new service to help parents help teenagers?
ReachOut.com/Parents
Free and available 24/7, ReachOut.com/Parents provides evidence-based practical support and tips that encourage effective communication and relationships between parents and young people aged 12–18 years, as well as easy-to-read information on a range of mental health and wellbeing issues. The service features more than 140 fact sheets, stories, practical tips and tools, and also provides access to an online community forum so that parents can connect with each other to share experiences in an anonymous, supportive space.
Friendships
One of the big themes that I work with students around in my social work role is friendships. Friendships are particularly important to teenagers for many reasons – from having a support network to feeling a sense of belonging and acceptance. Community Education Counsellor
SCHOOL-BASED YOUTH HEALTH NURSE
School Based Youth Health Nurses work in secondary schools across Queensland, with their focus being on preventative healthcare, early detection and brief intervention for all the students in Year 7 to 12.
Confidential Student Appointments
Students can make an appointment with the SBYHN in person, by emailing nurse.mtgravatt@health.qld.gov.au or via the student counter, to discuss any questions they may have about their health and wellbeing. These appointments are confidential, and the nurse will not share any information without the student’s consent, unless there is a significant risk to the student’s health or safety.
In most cases, the SBYHN encourages students to talk to their parents or carers about their health and wellbeing issues and often the nurse supports students to do this.
Individual health consultations may include:
- Early detection of actual or potential health problems.
- Providing information, options or referrals to relevant health services to provide them with further assessment, treatment and/or support.
- Provide brief interventions and/or referrals to other services as appropriate.
Some of the main issues for which students have accessed the SBYHN this year have been mental health, including social and emotional wellbeing, relationsnhips, family issues, stress, eating issues, sexual and reproductive health, drug use (including tobacco and alcohol) and growth and development.

Please encourage the young person in your care to contact the nurse if they require any information or support for any health-related issues. The SBYHN can also take referrals from teachers and parents at nurse.mtgravatt@health.qld.gov.au. Esther is available Wednesday and Friday.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN THE RIRC

RIRC – More Than a Library
The RIRC, our library, is open before school and at first and second break each day. In addition to being a great place to read or study, students can play board games, do mindfulness colouring, complete jigsaws, even learn Origami. As the term progresses, more lunch-time activities will be added. The article, ‘WHAT’S HAPPENING IN THE RIRC’ outlines the opening hours and lunch-time schedule. If your child is new to the school or would like to meet likeminded friends, ask them to read the screens as they enter the library, there’s loads of fabulous information about how to find and choose books.
Valentine’s Day
Love was truly in the air at the RIRC this Valentine's Day as students came together to celebrate in unique and heart-warming ways.
One of the highlights of the day was the 'Blind Date with a Book' event, which captured the imagination of many. Participants embraced the challenge of selecting a gift-wrapped book without knowing anything about its contents. It was lovely to witness so much excitement with students eagerly embracing the unknown, demonstrating their love for literature and the thrill of discovery. A total of 30 books were borrowed.
In addition to the literary adventures, the Student Council provided a platform for spreading messages of love and kindness throughout the school. The post box dedicated to sending messages of love served as a conduit for heartfelt expressions.
Thank you to everyone who participated, this Valentine’s Day at the RIRC, it was a celebration of friendship, kindness, and the joy of shared experiences.

The first Art Workshop has kicked off, led by Muaaza, a Year 7 student who now has a bustling second break every Monday. It's wonderful to see our new Year 7s actively participating!

Sora is Here!
Sora is an award-winning digital reading app that empowers students to discover age-appropriate eBooks, audiobooks and more from their school library.
How do I find books when I’m not in the RIRC?

SCHOOL ZONE PARKING
Electronic Gates at Loreburn Street
The Loreburn Street entrance electronic gates are now operational. This new addition aims to provide ease of operation and assist in managing traffic within our school grounds, ultimately enhancing the safety of our students.
The decision to install an electronic gate was driven by our commitment to ensuring a secure and controlled environment for our students and staff. By allowing access to authorised vehicles only, we can effectively monitor and regulate the flow of traffic on school grounds reducing congestion and minimising potential risk to students and staff.
It is crucial for all parents, guardians, and visitors to note that all other vehicles, apart from authorised vehicles, are required to remain outside of our school grounds at all times.
We kindly request your cooperation in adhering to this policy.
Brisbane City Council's School Zone Parking Compliance Program
Parents parking illegally at school drop offs and pick-ups are on notice with Brisbane City Council
School parking is being targeted by council officers in a program designed to tackle illegal parking around schools, from blocking driveways to parking on yellow lines.
Brisbane City Council has advised that parents are not complying and are parking over driveways, on yellow lines and double parking so council officers will issue fines for illegal parking to prevent the issue affecting local residents and student safety.
Council officers will be conducting patrols around the school to ensure safe parking. Parking fines will be issued in cases where illegal parking is observed.
We would like to take this opportunity to ask parents, guardians and visitors of our school to complying with local traffic conditions and laws and respect our neighbours by not parking across driveways, or waiting in driveways.
