A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

At Mount Gravatt High, our school values are more than just words on a wall, they are the foundation of how we learn, connect, and contribute. This term, although short in time, has already powerfully demonstrated how our focus on Active Citizenship is being brought to life through the meaningful actions of our students, staff, and community.
Defined by four key characteristics, proactive learning, critical and creative thinking, global perspective, and sustainability. Active Citizenship is about engaging with the world with purpose, empathy, and a drive to make a difference.
So far this term, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing this value in action.
Our ANZAC Day ceremonies, both at school and in the wider community, were moving reminders of the importance of service, remembrance, and connection. I was incredibly proud of how our students conducted themselves with maturity, compassion, and a genuine respect for those who served. Their participation reflected a deep understanding of history and an appreciation for the values that underpin a cohesive society.
This week, I also had the pleasure of joining our Year 7 students on camp at Tallebudgera. It was a joy to see them step outside their comfort zones, support one another, and embrace challenges with courage and curiosity. Their willingness to learn, collaborate, and reflect highlighted the proactive and creative spirit at the heart of Active Citizenship.
Across classrooms, co-curricular programs, and community events, our students continue to demonstrate what it means to be active, informed, and thoughtful contributors to society. Thank you to our committed teachers, whose passion and guidance help make this possible. Whether it’s engaging in sustainability initiatives, exploring global issues, or simply making kind and considered choices in everyday interactions, our students are laying the groundwork for a better future.
As educators and parents, we each play a part in nurturing these qualities, encouraging conversations, modelling curiosity, and celebrating the small moments of citizenship that shape who our young people become.
Thank you all for partnering with us as we continue to grow a generation of capable, responsible, and compassionate citizens.
Andrew Beattie
Principal

WINTER UNIFORM
During the colder months, we recommend wearing the winter uniform in layers to provide extra warmth. Layering is ideal for chilly mornings and allows for easy adjustment as the temperature rises throughout the day.
Winter uniform includes:
Long pants - dark college grey. Trousers must be worn with the belt (approx. 30mm black leather belt with plain buckle).
Jumper - Red poly/cotton V-necked jumper with black MGH embroidered. Students may wear the school jumper or jacket. Sleeves are to be worn at the wrists (not pushed up the arms). When worn with sports uniform, polo shirt is to be tucked in so it cannot be seen.
Jacket - Black and red microfibre jacket with black collar, zipped front embroidered with MGH. Students may wear the school jumper or jacket. Sleeves are to be worn at the wrists (not pushed up the arms). When worn zipped up with sports uniform, polo shirt is to be tucked so it cannot be seen.
Track Sport Pants - Plain black microfibre, with cotton lining (optional in Winter, June to August) and are to be free of logos and stripes.
Scarf - Red with embroidered MGH (optional in Winter, June to August) and must be purchased from the uniform shop.
Senior Formal Tie - Year 10-12 boys to be worn during winter.
All items are available from the Uniform Shop.
Stockings - Plain black or charcoal stockings are optional year round for all girls. They should not be worn with socks or sport shorts and must always be in good condition. Please note, they are not available for purchase at the Uniform Shop.
Students are permitted to wear layers under their uniform, such as white singlets, long-sleeved shirts, or thermal items, as needed, provided they are fully covered by the uniform.

WINDOWS UPGRADE FOR STUDENT LAPTOPS
Student laptops are required by the Department of Education to have Windows 11 installed by October 2025. This timeline ensures all devices have the new version of Windows installed before Windows 10 reaches its end-of-life. Any laptops not updated by this time will be forcefully removed from the network by Department of Education teams.
Students in Years 12, 11, 9 and 8 need to have the new version of Windows installed. Year 7 and 10 students’ new laptops have been issued with Windows 11 and do not require any upgrades. We recognise that laptops are an essential tool for students to access curriculum and as such a plan has been developed that ensures students will only be without their laptops for one night and will only miss 15 minutes of curriculum time to take their laptops to the IT department. All students will have their laptops for the weekend.
Schedule for Windows Installation for Years 12,11,9 and 8
Year 12 | Year 11 | Year 9 | Year 8 |
Weeks 4 and 5 | Weeks 6 and 7 | End of Term 3 - new laptops to be issued. Back-up plan is for Year 9 laptops to have installation occur in Week 1, Term 3 when students are on camp. | Weeks 4 and 5 |
Students will take their laptops at the end of period 4 (on a designated day) to IT. Students can collect laptops from D14 between 8am-8:30am the following day. If laptops are not collected before 8:30am, they can be collected from the RIRC (library) staffroom at break times.
Backing up important data
All data on the laptop will be reset during the Windows 11 installation. Students must ensure that any important files or data is backed up prior to having Windows 11 installed. Students should back up their Documents, Desktop, Pictures, and Video folders.
Preferred backup solution - OneDrive
OneDrive is available for all students to use, offering cloud-based storage, ensuring no data is lost in the event of a laptop becoming faulty, damaged, or lost. Students can access OneDrive via https://qedu-my.sharepoint.com/ or they can use the sync client on their laptop.
Alternative backup solution – removable media
Students can backup files to a USB or external drive.
Parents and students will be emailed a reminder the day before their scheduled Window installation to ensure they have backed up their laptops. If a student is absent on the day their class takes their laptops to IT there will be an organised catch up at the start of Term 3.
Thank you for supporting the school in this process and ensuring our students are prepared for this process.

DROPPING OFF AND PICKING UP
Parents are not permitted to drop off/pick up on school grounds
Parents dropping off and picking up students must do so safely and without driving into the school grounds. We ask all parents/carers follow this instruction to keep our school safe.

Anzac Day Service – Holland Park, Mount Gravatt RSL
The Anzac Day spirit continued with our Senior Leaders attending the recent ceremony at Holland Park, Mount Gravatt to lay a wreath in honour of all who have fought for our Country. The rain did not dampen the spirits of all who attended and marched alongside our veterans and representatives from our community. Lest we Forget.

Year 11 Dean
Welcome back to Anthony Lollback, who returns to the role of Dean. Students have had Anthony as their Dean since they started high school. Thank you again to Jacqui Robotham who stood in as Dean in Term 1. I’m sure Mr Lollback will enjoy checking in with the Year 11s, catching up on their entry into the Senior school and ensuring they are prepared for a number of big events coming up.
Performance Conversations
With the Interim reports, the Senior School Team and HODs have been conducting performance conversations for students not on track for success. Discussions involve identifying reasons for the results and strategies for success. Students can be also referred to Guidance Officers to provide further advice regarding subject changes. For Year 11s, this needs to be completed by week 5.
Students who choose to stay in their current subject can find a few lessons and resources available through the Seek Worthy Things Qlearn course and their ATOMI log in. We also have access to free Webinars if parents are keen to help support their student in Senior.

Student Reflections on Term One
A highlight of Term One was Harmony Day, which was thoroughly enjoyed by the whole school. The Colour Run is always a popular event!
Students described the term’s events as “invigorating—particularly with the presence of two of the best days of the year: the Swimming Carnival and Cross Country!”
A group of aspirational students had the amazing opportunity to attend the YLAA Leadership Conference at City Hall and it was described as an amazing event with “electric energy”.

Seek Worthy Things Term 2
The focus for Term 2 SWT is the student value of Inclusivity paired with the Australian Curriculum Personal and Social capability element of Social Awareness.
Our focus areas this term under the banner of Inclusivity and Social Awareness are:
- Empathy
- Relational Awareness
- Community Awareness
This topic started in Week 10 last term with the Teenager performance by Mashed Theatre and will continue this theme throughout Term 2. They have started SWT this term developing empathy and an understanding of what it means to be inclusive. Next, they learned about Locus of Control and explored what is inside their control and what is outside of their control, particularly when working and collaborating with others. Students explored how to be a good team player as well as some tips for using respectful communication when navigating conflict. Students explored essential elements for working well as a team, trust, self-management (positively framing mindset) and effective communication. They then put this into practice with a Team Challenge. We are hoping students are able to apply these lessons to Year 7 Camp and Year 8 Team Building Events this term.

Year 7 Camp
Our Year 7 students have an exciting start to Term 2 at the annual Year 7 Camp at Tallebudgera in Week 3, 1-3 of May. We thank Year 7 Dean, Ashleigh Doyle and supporting administration staff, for the bulk of the administrative work that is required to ensure a successful camp. We also appreciate the commitment from the Teachers, Teacher Aides and Year 11 Senior Mentors who volunteered to attend. We look forward to the newsletter article from Year 7 Students and Senior Mentors in the next edition with a photo gallery.

Year 8 Team Building Event
Tuesday 27 May
Our Year 8 students also have an exciting term ahead! In Week 6, our Year 8 students will have the opportunity to engage in the Year 8 Team Building event. Students will participate in workshops themed around teamwork and our student values of Growth Mindset, Inclusivity and Active Citizenship to start the day. Following this, students will be challenged to work as a team at stations involving various team-building inflatable activities. We thank Year 8 Dean, Madison Wheeler, for her efforts in organising this event and look forward to hearing about what a fun-filled day it is.
Please look out for consent via QParents for this event. The due date for this to be completed is the 12 May.

Year 7 Grandparents' Morning
Friday 6 June
Period 1 - Morning Tea
We invite all Grandparents and Special Guests of our Year 7 students to a personalised tour of the school by their young person, and morning tea on Friday 6 June. We will commence with some entertainment in the school hall at 9:45am and conclude at 11:30am. Please keep an eye out over the next few weeks for an invitation email with further details.

Level Up Club – Recommences Week 3
Level Up Club will return in Week 3 this term. We are encouraging students in the Junior School to attend Level-Up Club sessions to set goals, develop skills and strategies to work towards them, and put in the necessary effort and preparation to be successful in their upcoming assessment, while being supported by the Junior Secondary Team and Student Leaders. These sessions are on every week from 12:50pm to 1:20pm on a Wednesday at second break in the RIRC.
Support offered to achieve the following:
- Reflect and set goals
- Develop organisation strategies

DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGIES

Celebrating Harmony Day with Creativity in Industrial Technology and Design
At the end of Term 1, our school celebrated Harmony Day, a day dedicated to promoting cultural diversity and inclusiveness. To reflect the spirit of the day, Industrial Technology and Design held a fun, hands-on activity where students combined origami with craft techniques to create beautiful flowers. Using materials such as paper, buttons, hot glue guns, and skewers, the students not only expressed their creativity but also embraced the values of cultural appreciation and diversity.
Under the guidance of teachers, students began by mastering the art of origami to form the petals of their flowers. Once the basic structure was complete, they added their own unique touches, using buttons for the center and securing everything with hot glue. Skewers were then used as stems, giving each flower an elegant finish. The result was a stunning display of vibrant flowers, each representing the beauty of diversity.
This creative activity allowed students to explore their talents while reinforcing the themes of Harmony Day—collaboration, respect, and cultural inclusiveness. It was a fantastic way to end Term 1!

Looking Ahead: Year 10 Storage Ottoman Project
This term, our Year 10 students have embarked on an exciting new project. The creation of a storage ottoman. Currently in the early stages, students are learning to use advanced technology such as the CNC laser engraver to add their own unique designs to the wood. They are also gaining hands-on experience with tools like the router, table saw, and pan brake to cut, shape, and refine their pieces.
In addition to woodworking skills, students will explore simple upholstery techniques to add a cushioned element to their ottomans. This project provides an excellent opportunity for students to develop their technical abilities while creating functional and stylish pieces. We’re excited to see their progress as they continue to learn and grow in the Industrial Technology and Design course!

HOMEWORK GUIDELINES
HOMEWORK GUIDELINES
Homework is a very valuable part of the learning process. In the less structured environment at home, students have the opportunity through focused activities to deepen knowledge, refine a range of skills and develop their thinking processes. Homework also enables time management and organisational skills to be developed.
A teacher at a state school may require a student of the school to complete homework. The school’s Principal decides what is a reasonable amount of homework for a student at each year level. In deciding what is reasonable, the principal takes into account the following guidelines as developed for the school under Section 427(2)(f) of the Education Act.

SCHOOL-BASED YOUTH HEALTH NURSE
School Based Youth Health Nurses work in secondary schools across Queensland, with their focus being on preventative healthcare, early detection and brief intervention for all the students in Year 7 to 12.
Confidential Student Appointments
Students can make an appointment with the SBYHN in person, by emailing nurse.mtgravatt@health.qld.gov.au or via the student counter, to discuss any questions they may have about their health and wellbeing. These appointments are confidential, and the nurse will not share any information without the student’s consent, unless there is a significant risk to the student’s health or safety.
In most cases, the SBYHN encourages students to talk to their parents or carers about their health and wellbeing issues and often the nurse supports students to do this.
Individual health consultations may include:
- Early detection of actual or potential health problems.

Some of the main issues for which students have accessed the SBYHN this year have been mental health, including social and emotional wellbeing, relationsnhips, family issues, stress, eating issues, sexual and reproductive health, drug use (including tobacco and alcohol) and growth and development.

Please encourage the young person in your care to contact the nurse if they require any information or support for any health-related issues. The SBYHN can also take referrals from teachers and parents at nurse.mtgravatt@health.qld.gov.au. Esther is available Wednesday and Thursday.

FINANCE

Mrs Sarah Harvey
Business Manager
Thank you to families who have either paid the annual SRS fee in full or are paying via term instalments or a customised payment plan. The term instalment due dates are: Term 1 - 21/02/25, Term 2 - 23/04/25 and Term 3 - 25/07/25.
If you have not yet made an SRS payment or arranged a payment plan, we ask that you contact our Student Accounts team as a matter of priority to arrange this. Our contact details are: studentaccounts@mtgravattshs.eq.edu.au or 3291 5222.
As the Student Resource Scheme includes laptop hire, SRS fees must be up to date for students to continue taking their laptops home. In the coming week, we will be contacting families with outstanding SRS fees to change their SRS plan from a take home laptop to a daily loan device program. Students will still have access to a laptop, however, will be required to collect the laptop from Ask IT each morning and return it each afternoon.
Please also note that students can only attend camps, excursions, sports and extra-curricular activities if the students' SRS fees are up to date.
If you have any questions or require assistance with a payment or a payment plan, please do not hesitate to contact us.

SCHOOL ZONE PARKING
Electronic Gates at Loreburn Street
The Loreburn Street entrance electronic gates are now operational. This new addition aims to provide ease of operation and assist in managing traffic within our school grounds, ultimately enhancing the safety of our students.
The decision to install an electronic gate was driven by our commitment to ensuring a secure and controlled environment for our students and staff. By allowing access to authorised vehicles only, we can effectively monitor and regulate the flow of traffic on school grounds reducing congestion and minimising potential risk to students and staff.
It is crucial for all parents, guardians, and visitors to note that all other vehicles, apart from authorised vehicles, are required to remain outside of our school grounds at all times.
We kindly request your cooperation in adhering to this policy.
Brisbane City Council's School Zone Parking Compliance Program
Parents parking illegally at school drop offs and pick-ups are on notice with Brisbane City Council
School parking is being targeted by council officers in a program designed to tackle illegal parking around schools, from blocking driveways to parking on yellow lines.
Brisbane City Council has advised that parents are not complying and are parking over driveways, on yellow lines and double parking so council officers will issue fines for illegal parking to prevent the issue affecting local residents and student safety.
Council officers will be conducting patrols around the school to ensure safe parking. Parking fines will be issued in cases where illegal parking is observed.
We would like to take this opportunity to ask parents, guardians and visitors of our school to complying with local traffic conditions and laws and respect our neighbours by not parking across driveways, or waiting in driveways.
