A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Mount Gravatt High aims to develop a sense of belonging through the structure of our Four Pillars - Academic, Cultural, Sport and Community. These pillars provide our students with additional curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities. Students develop and gain recognition for their individual strengths helping to create a sense of belonging.
Strengthening our Cultural pillar, our events have continued in earnest this term with a range of Vocal Nights and Instrumental Music Nights, which were great successes, showcasing the unique talent of our students who excel in The Arts.
Grandparents’ and Special Guests’ Morning was a chance for Year 7 students to join with their special people in their lives and share with them an insight into life at Mount Gravatt High. Events such as this are critical in ensuring the Community pillar is a strength of our school. I thank each and every family member both near and far for their support of their young person. We received great feedback on the day from attendees for “the demeanour of student hosts who were chatty and very well presented.”

Performance Conversations
We hope you are pleased with the results of your senior student, after report cards were issued last week. The senior school team is very proud of all of their achievements. For those who may have not achieved a level of success with their subjects in either achievement, effort, or behaviour we are here to help.
All students in Years 11 and 12 have access to study skills, exam preparation and time management resources via the ATOMI website and their Seek Worthy Things (SWT) lessons. Students can access these via an email link and through the SWT Qlearn course. If your child has not engaged with these, please ask them to email me and I will re-issue the invite.
Students in both Years 11 and 12 have been spoken to by presenters from the Elevate team who talk about their own experiences while navigating senior studies and provide valuable resources to help prepare students for their external exams.
Their next parent webinar is on 18 June, 6.30pm with an Ask me anything, Live Q&A – register at:
Please email me on swils118@eq.edu.au or read the Careers Hub Newsletter for more opportunities around pathways.
2025 External Assessment Timetable now available
Students undertaking the SEE language exams will receive their exam timetable in Term 3.
Students will prepare for their external exams through the various subjects, through external exam preparation lessons, tutorials (held in Term 4) and by downloading past test papers from the QCAA website.
Students should be monitoring their results through their Student Portal login page via the myQCE page. Students will also access their QCE and External Exam results in December, via this log in.
MGH Biggest Morning Tea
Once again, the senior school embraced their giving spirit by attending the Cancer Council’s Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea on Friday 23 May.
With over 200 students and staff, the event was huge. It was inspiring to see everyone come together for a worthy cause. Together we raised over $600 towards this cause that is close to so many of us.
A big thank you to Ms Kessell for all her coordination with our school partners who donated prizes which we raffled off to raise funds. These include:
- Cr Krista Adams, Holland Park Ward
- Joe Kelly, Member for Greenslopes
- Kara Cook, Member for Bonner
- Zarraffa’s Mt Gravatt
- Tafe Queensland
- Mount Gravatt High P&C

YLead
Our future leaders, or those students seeking leadership skills, can take part in the Ylead experience on Friday 29 August. Students will experience team building exercises and understand what it is to be a leader. A wonderful opportunity for students interested in becoming a School Captain, House Captain, Senior Leader, or Mentor. Expressions of interest need to be returned by 25 July. Please email Ms McConnell (Year 10 Dean) on cmmcc3@eq.edu.au or Mr Lollback (Year 11 Dean) on ajlol0@eq.edu.au if you would like to register for this all day event. The cost is $25.00.

Career Expo Excursion
On Thursday, 12 June, our Year 10 students went to the Brisbane Career & Employment Expo, at the Brisbane Convention Centre. As a bonus, this year’s event also included the WorkSkills Australia competition involving participants from around the country, representing their states and territories from more than 60 trades and skills areas. Competitions are designed by industry and skills experts who assess an individual’s knowledge, practical competence and employability skills against a set of strict criteria. Watching these trade experts as work was certainly inspiring to many students and left many of us wanting to indulge in the products of the amazing bakers on hand!
Students represented Mt Gravatt State High in an exemplary manner and our accompanying staff, including teachers and members of our student support team, enjoyed the conversations with our aspiring young people. Thank you, students and staff, and hopefully, families might see some different, or consolidated, future pathways being pursued.

Year 9 Camp
Our Year 9 Dean, Ms Boundy, recently sent you information about the unfortunate delay to our Year 9 Camp. While definitely not our preference to delay the camp, we believe that the new arrangements, in Term 4, will bring amazing opportunities for our students prior to heading into their pre-senior Year 10 studies. Thank you for your understanding regarding this matter.
Year 9 Business Market Day
This year, Middle School Business students have had the opportunity to be involved in Market Day for both Year 10 (Term 1) and Year 9 (this Term). Our three Year 9 Ventures classes recently delighted the school with their amazing products and learnt much about the expectations of running a business. Thank you to the students for their efforts and for our teachers, Ms King, Mr Sammon and Ms Yin, for guiding the students through this, sometimes, hectic event!

AARA Applications when absent for Assessment
If a student is unable to attend school, due to illness or other circumstances beyond their control, they need to submit an AARA application to allow them further time to complete their assignments or sit a missed exam. Full details of the reason for absence are important to enable the AARA team to make a reasonable judgement on the reasons for absence. If you are able to obtain a medical certificate, it should be lodged with the application. With the assessment phase in full swing currently, and reports due to parents and carers at the end of term, there may be a need for an AARA to be completed. The application can be found on the school website under “Support and Resources” > “Forms and documents” > “Documents”. There is a specific application form for Years 7 – 10.

Year 7 Grandparents and Special Guests’ Morning Tea
The entire Mt Gravatt High community comes together to host our annual Year 7 Grandparents’ and Special Guests Morning each year.
Firstly, our talented musicians provided quality entertainment lead by Mr Fellows. Thank you to our Instrumental students.
The morning culminated with a morning tea in the hall, placed at beautifully decorated tables and served by our Leaders. Our special invited guests prepared a morning tea made with love that they shared with their tables. A special treat for our Year 7 students!
Guests were then taken on a tour of the school by their young person, superbly supported by Junior Secondary Leaders, Middle School Leaders and Senior Mentors. Our guests also enjoyed the historical display. Overall, it was a lovely community event and we thank all student volunteers for their assistance with this event. We thanks our guests for their attendance at this event. Please see some of the feedback received from this event below.
“The attention to detail and organisation was very professional, really lovely table settings for instance, and the music performances also very impressive. with an obvious attention to a high standard expected. Our hosts (hostesses) were chatty and lovely and very well presented.”

Year 8 Teambuilding Day: A Day of Fun and Growth!
On Tuesday of Week 6, our Year 8 students stepped away from their usual routines to take part in a Teambuilding Day designed to strengthen connections and build the skills that matter most: collaboration, resilience, and community.
The day began in the hall with a series of hands-on group activities led by Ms Wheeler and Ms March. These sessions encouraged students to think about what it means to be a part of a team: how to listen, how to lead, and how to support one another. Through quick drama challenges, group discussions and even a bit of dancing, students explored new ways to communicate and work together. The atmosphere was open and welcoming, with every student encouraged to contribute and be heard, highlighting our value of inclusivity in action.
Our Senior Mentors were an integral part of the morning, offering support, encouragement, and leadership to their younger peers. Their involvement gave students a real-life example of active citizenship, stepping up to guide others and contribute to the community around them.
By late morning, the action moved to the oval, where five inflatable obstacle stations (thanks to Aussie Inflatables) added energy and challenge to the day. These team-based activities pushed students to take risks, adapt quickly, and support each other, whether they were racing through tunnels or helping a teammate across an obstacle. The focus wasn’t on being the fastest or strongest, but on giving things a go, backing each other up, and learning along the way, a true reflection of a growth mindset.
At morning tea, our Middle School Leaders cooked and served a BBQ which all students enjoyed.
Throughout the day, students showed what it means to be part of a positive and connected cohort. They encouraged each other, embraced challenges, and celebrated the effort as much as the outcome.
Thank you to our Junior Secondary team, teaching and support staff, Senior Mentors, Middle School Leaders and Aussie Inflatables for making the day possible. We’re proud of how our Year 8 students showed up for one another with openness, enthusiasm, and a willingness to grow.
A reflection from our Year 8 Junior Leaders
Team building was a fun day for all year 8's. This day required us all to use multiple skills to help our team win. These skills also helped build the team spirit. Empathy is important for a wonderful team - Do not blame all your mistakes on your teammates use a growth mindset and find a way to fix the problem. Teamwork uses many skills that do not come natural for all but despite this all Year 8s were able to take on the skills of communication, a can-do attitude and searched for creative answers to get around the challenges. For an effective team to work well everyone needs to be included and take on the responsibility of trying to get involved. Team building day was an extremely fun day for all, teaching us how to be a team and the skills needed to succeed. Well done Year 8s! - Mikhail & Elsje
On team building day, everyone was split into teams with people we were unfamiliar with. Through the challenges we faced, we realised that everyone in our team had to take part for the challenges to be overcome. When everyone put effort into the activity, we were able to achieve a better result. We also found that communication is key when working in a group, whether it be strategizing, cheering each other on or calling out so the team is in sync. These activities helped us learn that for a team to be successful, in the challenge and in having fun, it is vital for everyone to participate, put in effort and communicate as in each team every person plays a significant role. - Alex & Diya
Year 8 teambuilding consisted of numerous activities that encouraged teamwork and relationships with our peers. The rolling mattress had the group frantically rolling the inflatable cylinders, stabilising the ‘mattress’ in hopes to finish the race first. The next activity was 'the plank', where communication was key as our legs were strapped onto a plank and our group rushed to win the race. The inflatable course race focused on agility and speed while the thunder ball relied on strength and endurance as we ran a relay whilst holding the massive ball above our heads. Finally, the balancing ball was a thrilling experience that required dedication to keep the ball afloat. - Naseeha and Anat
For Shirly and I, the 2025 Teambuilding Day was an awesome experience packed with fun and challenges. Our biggest challenge yet was where we worked through the ski walk, where we had to walk 7 metres back and fourth with 5 of your team members. The biggest challenge of this was communication - many people were doing their own thing and were out of sync. Although this problem had occurred, people across many teams stepped up as a leader to guide their teammates as a unified voice. And of course, the highlight of everyone's day was racing through the inflatable obstacle course. - Ettiene and Shirly
A Reflection from our Senior Mentors
Our Senior Mentors played an active and invaluable role in making Teambuilding Day a success. Not only did they help set up and organise the event, but they also led activities, guided our Year 8 students through each challenge, and offered thoughtful support and encouragement throughout the day. We thank them for their leadership, energy, and commitment.
In addition to their hands-on involvement, our mentors reflected on the growth they witnessed in the students. Many groups initially struggled with communication and coordination, especially around leadership and giving directions. However, students began to develop creative strategies, such as using “1” for left and “2” for right, and improved as they regrouped and adjusted after each round.
Over time, teams became more effective at working together, drawing on each other’s strengths and learning the value of encouragement and respectful communication. Students came to understand that listening, kindness, and including all voices led to greater success.
As one of our mentors, Shyla, put it, “They started to build on each other’s strengths and communicate more effectively.” It was clear that by the end of the day, students not only had fun but also felt a genuine sense of achievement.

SHEP Brisbane May 2025
On May 30 – June 1 two of our most outstanding young musicians, Diya K and Ian C, were chosen to participate in the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University’s State Honours Ensemble Program (SHEP) Brisbane 2025. They had a wonderful time playing challenging music in ensembles with other talented students led by some of the best conductors in Queensland. After rehearsing on the Friday night and all-day Saturday, students celebrated by sharing their music in concerts for friends, family and the wider community in the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University theatre. Congratulations Diya and Ian on this achievement!

Flag Football Royalty Visit Year 10 HPE Classes
Our Year 10 Health and Physical Education students were treated to an unforgettable experience recently, with a visit from some of Australia’s finest Flag Football athletes! Special guests from Flag Football Queensland including past and present representatives of Queensland and Australia, the current Australian U15s coach, and a current national team player who is competing in the USA with hopes of qualifying Australia for the 2028 LA Olympics, joined our classes to share their expertise.
These Flag Football stars ran dynamic sessions with all Year 10 HPE classes, providing students with hands-on guidance to improve their technique, strategies, and game tactics. From refining passing skills to breaking down gameplay scenarios, the sessions were packed with insight, energy, and inspiration. Our students gained valuable knowledge and skills, and their enthusiasm for the sport skyrocketed thanks to the passion and professionalism of our visitors.
We were extremely fortunate to host such high-calibre athletes and coaches, and we thank Flag Football Queensland for this incredible opportunity.
Looking ahead, we’re excited to announce that Flag Football Queensland will be hosting a U16 tournament in September. We’re currently working toward nominating both a male and female Year 10 team to represent our school in this event. With the foundation laid by our special guests, our students are in a great position to compete and continue developing in this fast-growing sport.
Stay tuned for more updates as we prepare for tournament day!

The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD) – August 2025
Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019).
Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:
- year of schooling
- category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional
- level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.
The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified, the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured.
Please follow this link for a fact sheet about the NCCD for parents, guardians and carers if you would like to learn more. This factsheet has also been translated to other languages and is available at www.nccd.edu.au/tools/fact-sheet-parents-guardians-and-carers

Year 10 Japanese Shopping Excursion
Year 10 Japanese students have been exploring the topic of Shopping in their language studies. On Wednesday 28 May, they enjoyed an excursion that allows them to immerse themselves and use their Japanese language skills in an authentic Japanese shopping experience, right here in Brisbane.
The day started with a trip to Japanese giftware shop ‘Kazuyo’s Collection’ at West End, with students asking questions to find out what things were, how much they cost, as well as making purchase decisions and requests. The next stop on the shopping tour was delicious lunch at Ramen Danbo, where every student ordered their lunch in Japanese and ended their meal by expressing their appreciation to the restaurant staff. From there, students went to Brisbane CBD to visit two more Japanese retail chains (Daiso Japan discount store and Uniqlo fashion store).
Well done to all students. They showed great interest and enthusiasm and a willingness to practice all aspects of cross-cultural communication including reciprocating physical gestures, mealtime phrases, and good manners. This, along with their consideration of other store patrons, has earned them much respect from the Japanese sales staff at all stores visited. Our Year 10 students of Japanese are definitely becoming Australia’s next generation of international ambassadors.

12 Japanese Cultural Excursion
At the beginning of Term 2, Year 12 Japanese students visited the Japanese Garden at Mt Coot-tha Botanical Gardens to celebrate their Japanese learning journey. Students visited the Japanese garden to participate in the Hanami flower-viewing and enjoy a picnic. On this outing, students explored the gardens and bonsai gallery to gain an appreciation of the artistry within Japanese culture. After the garden visit, students enjoyed a Japanese lunch at Koto Sanpo Restaurant.
Our Year 12 students had the opportunity to be dressed in Yukata and experience the feeling of traditional Japan right here in Brisbane. A yukata is an unlined cotton summer kimono, worn in casual settings such as summer festivals. Thank you to Kimonoya for providing the Yukata outfits. It was the perfect option for the Australian climate and the students looked fantastic in this traditional dress.

MGH Chemistry Teams Excel in State Titration Competition
MGH’s senior chemistry students have made an impressive mark in the 2025 Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI) Titration Competition, with ten teams participating across three weekends of high-level competition hosted at QUT, Griffith University, and here at MGH.
The RACI Titration Competition challenges students to apply their practical chemistry skills to determine the exact concentration of an unknown acid using titration. It’s a precise, high-pressure event that demands strong teamwork, careful technique, and sharp scientific thinking.
On Weekend 1 at QUT, four MGH teams competed, with Jimmy, Louis, and Haysing taking first place overall, outperforming dozens of schools from across the region. Their performance was a huge achievement and a proud moment for the school.
Weekend 2 at Griffith University saw another four teams represent MGH. Among the standout performers were Kathy and Deborah, who both earned High Distinctions for their individual results placing them among the top-scoring students in the competition.
The final two MGH teams will compete next week in our own laboratories, rounding out a very successful season. Once all results are submitted to RACI, the final scores will be tallied and national finalists announced with MGH in a strong position to be among them.
None of this would have been possible without the incredible support behind the scenes. A huge thank you to Mr Whitten and Ms Richards for training the teams and accompanying them to QUT and Griffith. And an especially big shoutout to Mrs Kerlin, our superstar Scientific Technician, for preparing and setting up all the equipment and chemicals during the students’ training often behind the scenes, but always essential.
Congratulations to all students who represented MGH so brilliantly. We eagerly await the final results and hope to see MGH Chemistry on the national stage!

University of Queensland School of Biomedical Science Excursion
The Integrated Pathology Learning Centre (IPLC) is dedicated to maintaining and developing The University of Queensland’s human pathology collection, ensuring its ongoing use in the study of disease, and promoting an understanding of health and disease. This furthers the mission of UQ to positively influence society through the transfer and application of knowledge.
The Year 12 Psychology cohort visited the IPLC on the 3 June for a workshop led by their Curator. This covered a broad range of topics in the QCAA syllabus including Localisation of the Brain, Disease, Mental Health Disorders and Addiction. Students were able to come face-to-face with a variety of diseases by viewing and comparing preserved human remains to investigate the effects of behavioural and environmental factors on health.
Our psychology excursion was such a cool and unforgettable experience. We got to see real brains affected by different diseases and learn about how certain parts of the brain, when damaged, impact how a person thinks or behaves. It was really interesting investigating what part of the brain was affected just by examining it! We also explored other organs like the heart, lungs, and stomach. Some of them were pretty disturbing to look at, but it was also really fascinating. Hearing the stories behind the organs made it all feel very real. We even got to walk around and check out heaps of different tissues, organs, and body parts that had been affected by disease. Overall, it was fun, a bit queasy at times, and super educational, we honestly wish we had more time to look around! By Baani

Year 10s Get Hands-On with Biology!
This term, our Year 10 students have dived headfirst into the fascinating world of Biology and things have certainly gotten gunky and competitive along the way!
One of the clear highlights was the ever-popular DNA extraction practical. There’s something undeniably satisfying about watching strands of real DNA appear from a simple mixture of strawberries, detergent, and alcohol. The classroom buzzed with excitement as students discovered the gooey, stringy substance that holds the code of life. It’s messy, it’s magical and it made for a memorable science experience.
Adding to the fun was the Battle of the Beaks practical, which brought out the inner predator in everyone! Students took on the role of birds with different “beak” types (think tweezers, spoons, scissors, binder clips…) and competed to collect as much “food” (think red beans, paperclips, toothpicks, rubber bands) as possible. With plenty of laughter and a spark of competitive spirit, students eagerly explored how different beak types fared in the battle for food. It was survival of the fittest and fastest!
It’s been a fantastic term of hands-on learning, creative thinking, and lots of laughs. Year 10 Biologists, we’re proud of your curiosity and enthusiasm.

Long pants - dark college grey. Trousers must be worn with the belt (approx. 30mm black leather belt with plain buckle).
Jumper - Red poly/cotton V-necked jumper with black MGH embroidered. Students may wear the school jumper or jacket. Sleeves are to be worn at the wrists (not pushed up the arms). When worn with sports uniform, polo shirt is to be tucked in so it cannot be seen.
Jacket - Black and red microfibre jacket with black collar, zipped front embroidered with MGH. Students may wear the school jumper or jacket. Sleeves are to be worn at the wrists (not pushed up the arms). When worn zipped up with sports uniform, polo shirt is to be tucked so it cannot be seen.
Track Sport Pants - Plain black microfibre, with cotton lining (optional in Winter, June to August) and are to be free of logos and stripes.
Scarf - Red with embroidered MGH (optional in Winter, June to August) and must be purchased from the uniform shop.
Senior Formal Tie - Year 10-12 boys to be worn during winter.
All items are available from the Uniform Shop.
Stockings - Plain black or charcoal stockings are optional year round for all girls. They should not be worn with socks or sport shorts and must always be in good condition. Please note, they are not available for purchase at the Uniform Shop.
Students are permitted to wear layers under their uniform, such as white singlets, long-sleeved shirts, or thermal items, as needed, provided they are fully covered by the uniform.
Senior jerseys may be worn.

HOMEWORK GUIDELINES
Homework is a very valuable part of the learning process. In the less structured environment at home, students have the opportunity through focused activities to deepen knowledge, refine a range of skills and develop their thinking processes. Homework also enables time management and organisational skills to be developed.
A teacher at a state school may require a student of the school to complete homework. The school’s Principal decides what is a reasonable amount of homework for a student at each year level. In deciding what is reasonable, the principal takes into account the following guidelines as developed for the school under Section 427(2)(f) of the Education Act.

Confidential Student Appointments
Students can make an appointment with the SBYHN in person, by emailing nurse.mtgravatt@health.qld.gov.au or via the student counter, to discuss any questions they may have about their health and wellbeing. These appointments are confidential, and the nurse will not share any information without the student’s consent, unless there is a significant risk to the student’s health or safety.
In most cases, the SBYHN encourages students to talk to their parents or carers about their health and wellbeing issues and often the nurse supports students to do this.
Individual health consultations may include:
- Early detection of actual or potential health problems.
- Providing information, options or referrals to relevant health services to provide them with further assessment, treatment and/or support.
- Provide brief interventions and/or referrals to other services as appropriate.

Some of the main issues for which students have accessed the SBYHN this year have been mental health, including social and emotional wellbeing, relationsnhips, family issues, stress, eating issues, sexual and reproductive health, drug use (including tobacco and alcohol) and growth and development.

SCHOOL ZONE PARKING
Electronic Gates at Loreburn Street
The Loreburn Street entrance electronic gates are now operational. This new addition aims to provide ease of operation and assist in managing traffic within our school grounds, ultimately enhancing the safety of our students.
The decision to install an electronic gate was driven by our commitment to ensuring a secure and controlled environment for our students and staff. By allowing access to authorised vehicles only, we can effectively monitor and regulate the flow of traffic on school grounds reducing congestion and minimising potential risk to students and staff.
It is crucial for all parents, guardians, and visitors to note that all other vehicles, apart from authorised vehicles, are required to remain outside of our school grounds at all times.
We kindly request your cooperation in adhering to this policy.
Brisbane City Council's School Zone Parking Compliance Program
Parents parking illegally at school drop offs and pick-ups are on notice with Brisbane City Council
School parking is being targeted by council officers in a program designed to tackle illegal parking around schools, from blocking driveways to parking on yellow lines.
Brisbane City Council has advised that parents are not complying and are parking over driveways, on yellow lines and double parking so council officers will issue fines for illegal parking to prevent the issue affecting local residents and student safety.
Council officers will be conducting patrols around the school to ensure safe parking. Parking fines will be issued in cases where illegal parking is observed.
We would like to take this opportunity to ask parents, guardians and visitors of our school to complying with local traffic conditions and laws and respect our neighbours by not parking across driveways, or waiting in driveways.
