A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Last week we acknowledged and celebrated the outstanding efforts and achievements of our students at our Semester 1 Celebration Assembly. This is an important event for our school community as it provides an opportunity to acknowledge all of our students who have demonstrated excellence across our Four Pillars: Academic, Cultural, Sport and Community.
Whilst maintaining a strong focus on academic achievement, we believe in holistic development of our students and also celebrate students sharing cultural talents, representing the school with pride on the sporting field, and making a difference through service and leadership. Through the implementation of our four pillars, our students continue to demonstrate what it means to be well-rounded, respectful and community-minded individuals.
The students recognised at this week’s assembly have shown dedication, perseverance and a positive attitude throughout Semester 1. They have engaged in their learning, participated fully in school life and made meaningful contributions to our strong school culture.
In the Academic Pillar, students are celebrated for their commitment to learning, growth and achievement across a wide range of subjects. 332 students received an Academic Excellence award for achieving a minimum of 4 A’s across their subjects on their Semester 1 Report.
The Cultural Pillar recognises those students who have embraced creativity and expression through the arts, languages and cultural events. 10 students received a Cultural Excellence award for demonstrated excellence within their respective fields of the creative arts (e.g SHEP and Creative Generation).
In the Sport Pillar, students are acknowledged for their effort, teamwork and school representation in sporting events and carnivals. 76 students received a Sporting Excellence award for representing MGH at a District or higher level within their chosen sport/s during Semester 1.
The Community Pillar honours those students who consistently demonstrated our school values to the highest level. 338 students received a Community Excellence award for achieving an A in effort and behaviour across all of their subjects on their Semester 1 Report.
Congratulations to every student who was recognised, their achievements are a testament to their hard work as well as the support they have received from their teachers and families.
As we move into the second half of the year, I encourage all students to continue to challenge themselves, try new opportunities and continue to uphold our four Pillars. Together, we will continue to ensure that our school community is a supportive place of learning where every student can thrive and succeed.

Year 12 – Photo Days
We have a few occasions coming up for students to look their presentable best. Our senior jersey group photo will take place on Friday 22 August during SWT. Please make sure to bring along your jersey for this photo.
On Thursday 28 August all Year 12s will be having their formal group photo taken. The expectation is that all students will be wearing the correct formal uniform, this includes ties, formal pants (no cargo pants!), formal shirts and shoes. The photograph will take place during period 2 in the Hall. Can’t wait to see you all there in your best uniform.
In Seek Worthy Things, our Year 12s are receiving specific instructions on how to unpack the content and dynamics of the external exams which they will undertake in Week 4 of Term 4. Study skills through ATOMI and tips provided by Elevate are all available to students via their SWT Qlearn courses.
Shortly our Year 12s will participate in the “External Exam Prep” where they will be tested using the exams developed by the QCAA that replicate the style of the external exams. The QCAA also release past exam papers and a public version of external exams on their website at https://www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/senior/senior-subjects
The external exam timetable for Term 4 has also been released and can be downloaded from the link below. This latest version also includes details of the SEE language exams for those students who have registered. This can also be downloaded from the student Portal.
Year 11 Camp
This week students received information regarding Year 11 Leadership camp at Maroon Dam in Week 1 of Term 4. The talk from MOEC answered a lot of questions regarding what students can expect. Students have expressed their interest in the activity groups, after hearing from staff who outlined the different groups, they can take part in. These range from the highly physical group which undertakes camping out to the less physically demanding group which can develop their leadership skills through low ropes, canoeing and even rock climbing. Camp packs and invoices have already been emailed so please make sure these are returned quickly to avoid disappointment. Forms need to be dropped off to the drop box at Student Services.
Ylead Leadership Day – 29 August
We are also providing leadership opportunities for students here at school. Ylead will be here on 29 August, conducting a range of activities which will test the abilities of those wanting to become a school leader or who want to take on an active citizenship role in their lives. Students should see or email Mr Lollback to express their interest.
Senor Education Training Profiles for Year 12s
Students are able to download, save and print their certificates and statements when they access their results via their learning account in the Student Portal on the myQCE website after Wednesday 17 December. Please make sure your student has logged in before this date to check their enrolments and internal assessment results, they will also need to update their contact details.
Year 12s need to ensure their QCAA Student Portal (MyQCE) uses a personal email, as their school email will cease when Year 12 also finishes.
Parents and students can also access comprehensive information relating to the workforce through the 2025 school leavers guide. For parents interested in finding out about opportunities from employers for their school leaver, please email me on swils118@eq.edu.au with the subject: School Leavers mailing list.

MIDDLE SECONDARY SCHOOL

Ms Stacey Warwick
Head of Department - Middle Secondary | Business | International Student Co-ordinator
Semester 2 has already started in a massive way for Middle School students. Last Monday’s Celebration Parade was overflowing with Year 9 and 10 students who achieved great things in both their academic pursuits and cultural and sporting endeavours. A particular mention goes out to:
Bethany Chiu, Casey-Jade Diep and Josaphine Tennent for their involvement in CGEN 2025
A number of Middle School students were involved in the Senior Drama Club’s recent performance The Case of the Givers Board. With immense talent on display, both on and off stage, the drama club represents yet another talent aspect of the Mount Gravatt High experience. Well done to all students involved. Similarly, our Dance Troupe is an eclectic mix of varying year levels and their recent success is both a tribute to the students and staff involved in their efforts. Congratulations on your recent success!
And, a big congratulations to Aesha Naidoo for her involvement in recent district Futsal trials.
Subject Selection
Information related to Year 9 into 10 subject options was presented to our Year 9 students recently at both a subject selection night and during Year 9 SWT. Students were offered a smorgasbord of subjects and the decisions around timetabling will be made shortly. The running of subjects is based on both student interest and the expertise of staff in particular areas, to provide for the maximum benefit in engaging in a subject. Students will still have time to discuss subject options with family and staff at the school before the end of the year.
Highlights for Semester 2
We have some key takeaways for Middle School students this coming semester, including:
- Year 9 Laptop update
- Year 9s will receive their new laptops during SWT on Thursday, 21 August.
- Please check with students that they have backed up any documents onto a USB / hard drive / OneDrive as they will not be able to retrieve their work once the old laptop is handed in
- Students have also been given explicit instructions about not placing stickers on their new laptop. The only sticker will be the MGH “skin” which identifies their laptop as both a student laptop and with their individual name
- Please ensure the EQ permission forms (handed to students as a papercopy in recent weeks) is returned before or on 21 August
- RACQ Learner Driver IQ workshop in Term 4
- Middle School Celebration BBQ in week 10 of Term 3
Year 9 Camp
The Middle School team is finalising details about the camp. Thank you for your understanding regarding the delay in getting information to you in this matter and further information will be sent out shortly, providing specific details of where and when the camp is and how much the camp will cost. We believe that the new arrangements, in Term 4, will bring amazing opportunities for our students prior to heading into their pre-senior Year 10 studies.
Work Help and AARA Applications when absent for assessment
Work Help is offered to Middle School students on Friday (from weeks 5 to 9 of each term), at second break in the RIRC. We encourage students, who may wish to utilise the supportive environment, to attend and work individually, in small peer groups and/or with teachers. To help stimulate brain cells, we offer fruit and sandwiches as an incentive to get proactive about their study.
If a student is unable to attend school, due to illness or other circumstances beyond their control, they need to submit an AARA application to allow them further time to complete their assignments or sit a missed exam. Full details of the reason for absence are important to enable the AARA team to make a reasonable judgement on the reasons for absence. If you are able to obtain a medical certificate, it should be lodged with the application. With the assessment phase in full swing currently and reports due to parents and carers at the end of term, there may be a need for an AARA to be completed. The application can be found on the school website under “Support and Resources” > “Forms and documents” > “Documents”. There is a specific application form for Years 7 – 10.

JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL

Mr Lachlan Buckingham
Acting Head of Department - Junior Secondary
Head of Department Update
It is with great pleasure that I would like to introduce myself as the Acting Head of Department for Junior School. I have recently moved down from Blackwater in Central Queensland where I previously held multiple HOD portfolios. I am thoroughly enjoying getting to know the fantastic students at Mount Gravatt High. I am looking forward to getting to know all students in Years 7 and Year 8 during my time here and working closely with the amazing Junior Secondary team to ensure all students are on track for success. One thing that has very much impressed me is the fantastic attitude to learning that students have at Mount Gravatt, students are engaged in their learning and are actively seeking continuous improvement. Students here model the values of Growth Mindset, Inclusivity and Active Learning through their actions at school.
For me I believe that success starts in the preparation and that it is essential that students are coming to school ready to learn. It is very important that students are coming to school with:
- fully stocked pencil case
- fully charged laptop
- exercise books for each subject
- materials for specialist subjects
- e.g. PE Uniform, blue apron & safety glasses or ingredients for IDT, etc.
8 Hours of sleep every night. This is essential for students to be able to maintain focus for the whole day.
It is important that students are placing their laptops on charge every night to ensure they have enough charge to last the day. Students at MGH are provided with excellent learning opportunities each day from their teachers and to get the best out of this, students need to be fully prepared. Building good routines is essential for all students.

We offer Level Up Club in the Junior School which is on once a week from week 3 – 9 each term. Students can attend and receive help with any class assessment or homework with support from student leaders and the Junior Secondary Team. We also provide brain food (fruit and sandwiches) to those who attend. Level Up Club will be on Thursday at 2nd break in the RIRC Annexe.

Seek Worthy Things
Seek Worthy Things is a social emotional learning program that provides a foundation for students to understand themselves and others, and navigate their relationships, lives, work and learning. Developing social and emotional capability can help students to cope with everyday challenges and improve learning and wellbeing. The program focuses on elements from the Personal and Social General Capability Continuum in the Australian Curriculum. Students with well-developed social and emotional skills find it easier to manage themselves, relate to others, collaborate, develop empathy, set goals and resolve conflict.
Each term there is a unit aligned to our MGH student values as well as the elements of the continuum. In Term 3, we will focus Respect and Self- Awareness. This term students will be able to unpack their personal and emotional awareness and refine their reflective thinking.
This term in Week 7 students in Year 8 will have a special presentation from Elevate Education focused on:
- Study Skills Kick Start
- Junior Time Management
- Memory & Mnemonics
Parades
Please see below table for our Term 3 parade schedule. Students are to arrive at 8:25am in the hall for parades and sit in form class/period 1 class in alphabetical order.
Junior Parade will be every second week. When Junior Parade ends, students will go to Seek Worthy Things (SWT). When we don’t have Junior Parade, students will have a full lesson of SWT.

Drama Club
Congratulations to the Senior Drama Club on their 2025 production ‘The Case Of The Givers Board’! This was a period piece and murder-mystery written by Year 12 student Anna Clarke. The show was directed my Max Foster and Anna Clarke, who led the ensemble through months of rehearsals to realise a suitably dramatic production. Kudos to the whole team... be proud of your work!

Year 8 Dance
Our Year 8 Dance students have been working hard on their assessment piece, focused on the genre of musical theatre. They've shown fantastic energy, creativity and commitment throughout rehearsals. It’s been great to see their confidence grow and we’re so proud of the amazing progress they’ve made. Well done!

Year 10-12 Music
Candlelight Concert - Joe Hisaishi
Last Friday 15 August, Years 10 – 12 Music students visited the impressive St John’s Cathedral in Brisbane City for a real-life experience of professional musicians of Paradiso playing the music hits of Joe Hisaishi. Famous for his wide range of emotive film music that blends features of eastern and western music with both film and minimalist stylistic features, students were impressed by both the clever compositions and the inspiring performance abilities of the musicians. The vast space of the church along with the candlelight setting really made this experience memorable for all in attendance and will help students prepare responses for their upcoming performance, analytical and composition tasks.

Year 12 Music Extension
Our Year 12 Music Extension evening was held on Thursday 7 August in our school's Studio. Four talented students - Jasmine, Makena, Nicole and Rain shared their musical talent and progress with close family, teachers and friends as they performed repertoire they chose for their final IA3 that demonstrated both their musicality and technical ability. Covering a wide variety of genres, the evening culminated with a whole-group rendition of the hit 'Life is a Highway'.
Thanks to all who supported or came along to celebrate this final performance with the students.

Honouring Magna Carta Day: Year 12 Legal Studies Reflects on 1215
This Magna Carta Day, our Year 12 Legal Studies students explored the historic fall of King John and the signing of the Magna Carta in 1215. They learned how this landmark document established the principle of equality before the law, limiting the king’s power and introducing accountability. Symbolically, everyone received a piece of King John’s crown, representing shared equity and the idea that no one is above the law. This powerful lesson reminds us of the enduring foundations of justice in our legal system today. Making crowns was half the fun!

Year 8 Gets Hands-On with Landforms in Geography
In our Landforms and Landscapes unit, Year 8 students transformed the long jump pit into a creative outdoor classroom! By shaping their own mini landforms, they gained a hands-on learning experience that helped them visualise how natural features like valleys, hills and volcanoes form.
This active approach brought geography to life, making concepts easier to understand and remember. It was exciting to see students collaborate, explore and connect theory with real-world landscapes right here at school!

Year 11 Geography Explores Sustainable Urban Planning
In Unit 2: Planning Sustainable Places, Year 11 Geography students experienced a bird’s eye view of Brisbane’s urban sprawl and transportation networks. This perspective helped them understand how cities expand and the challenges of managing growth sustainably. They also conducted an on-site investigation at Kangaroo Point, examining how urban design impacts the environment and community wellbeing. Through these activities, students gained valuable insights into balancing development with sustainability, preparing them to think critically about the future of urban spaces and the importance of thoughtful planning for liveable cities.

Year 9 IDT – Building Custom Speaker Boxes
Our Year 9 Industrial Design and Technology students have been busy combining creativity, problem-solving and hands on skills to create their very own custom speaker boxes.
The project involves a variety of techniques and tools, giving students the opportunity to experience a complete design and build process. Starting with CorelDRAW, students have designed the front panels for their speakers, which were then laser cut using our CNC machine. To ensure a professional finish, they have used a router to round off the edges before sanding each panel smooth.
Students focused on the technical side of construction, developing their soldering skills to connect the electronic components and wire up the power supply. This hands-on work gave them valuable insight into how each part functions to produce sound.
This project has been an excellent way for students to apply both their technical and creative skills, and the results are already looking fantastic. We can’t wait to see and hear the final products in action!

Head of Department – Inclusive Practices
The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD) – August 2025
Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019).
Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:
- year of schooling
- category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional
- level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.
The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified, the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured.
Please follow this link for a fact sheet about the NCCD for parents, guardians and carers if you would like to learn more. This factsheet has also been translated to other languages and is available at www.nccd.edu.au/tools/fact-sheet-parents-guardians-and-carers
If you have any questions about the NCCD, please contact the school to speak with Victoria Leadbeatter or email: vlead1@eq.edu.au

Mount Gravatt High Hosts Japanese Student Study Tour
From the 1 August to 11 August, Mount Gravatt High hosted 26 students and 3 staff from our Sister School in Japan. This is the second time we have hosted Tokyo City University Shiojiri High School. It was a fantastic opportunity for our students again to build connections and create lifelong memories. We would like to thank our 24 host families who took in the visiting Japanese students and created a very memorable experience for them.
We would also like to express our gratitude to Misato Kaneko, teacher at TCU Shiojiri High School, and staff from the Office Global Support, Ayumi Hori and Emi Furihata, for their efforts towards our partnership and this study tour.
I would also like to extend my thanks to Mount Gravatt teacher, Emily Jung who coordinated and put together an amazing itinerary for our visiting students. Emily went above and beyond to ensure this trip was a massive success and her dedication was very much appreciated by everybody involved. Another massive thank you to Stephanie Clark, who also went above and beyond to support Emily in ensuring a successful trip. I would like to thank both Emily and Stephanie for their efforts in coordinating and planning this trip.
The students had a full week of activities and excursions organised by Mount Gravatt High, Office Global Support and their Homestay Families. Some of the highlights of the trip were:
- Enjoyed Australian food at the welcome morning tea and farewell BBQ.
- Experienced Australian school life
- Participated in cultural exchange at our 7J Japanese Edge Cultural Afternoon
- Visited Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary to meet koalas and Australian wildlife
- Explored popular Brisbane tourist attractions
We look forward to visiting Tokyo City University Shiojiri High School in Term 4 during our Japan trip.

Mount Gravatt hosts Utsunomiya Junior College High School
From the 8 August to 12 August, we welcomed students from Utsunomiya Junior College High School. This is the first time we have hosted students from this school, and it provided a fantastic experience for Mount Gravatt students. Mount Gravatt buddies were able use their Japanese language skills in an authentic context.
Students experience English classes and also classes at Mount Gravatt High. On Friday afternoon we said goodbye to Utsunonmiya with an event filled afternoon. Utsunonmiya students had prepared traditional cultural activities and experiences for Mount Gravatt buddies. We would like to thank all involved in planning and organising this valuable opportunity.

7J Cultural Afternoon
In Week 4, we hosted Mount Gravatt State School Year 6 students and our visiting Japanese Students in a Japanese Cultural Afternoon. 7J presented their Kamishibai, folk tale paper theatre displays to the primary school students. Following this, students engaged in Kendama Challenge, Chopstick Races, Origami paper folding and Koma spinning tops practice. We thank Greer Sensei for organising this visit from MGSS students. All students had an excellent time engaging in cultural activities and celebrating Japanese language learning together.

Year 7 and 8 Japanese Obento Lunches
Grade 7 and 8 students participated in special Japanese lunch events at the end of Term 2 and start of Term 3. Students were able to try Japanese obento boxes provided by The Mazri Kitchen.
The Japanese EDGE students demonstrated leadership at this event helping to facilitate the event. We thank these EDGE students who volunteered at this event and helped to distribute the meals to the many students involved. These were very successful events where students enjoyed eating delicious food and learning about Japanese culture.
A massive thank you to Stephanie Clark who organised these lunches to provide students with these fantastic experiences.

EARLY DEPARTURE PROCEDURE
If you need your student/s to leave school before 2:40pm, please give them a note of explanation which is to be handed to Student Services before school. Parents will receive a SMS which they will need to reply to before students will be issued with a leave pass showing details of the leave time. This must be shown to their class teacher and then carried with them when they leave the school grounds. Due to school security, teachers cannot allow students to leave class without prior written approval.

Environmental Week
Environmental Week in week 3 was a major success! Not only was each activity incredibly busy, but many people across the school chipped in to make this run as smoothly as possible. We managed to collect a record-high number of bottles for just that week alone, so congratulations everyone!
Tuesday – Bingo Board Fundraiser & Eco-Friendly Coaster Making
Starting off strong on Tuesday, students were given the opportunity to weave their very own environmentally friendly coasters. A huge shoutout to Phoenix for leading this activity at lunch! Tuesday also announced the kicking-off of the Bingo Board! With 238 numbers available, and just $1 to enter, over 100 students selected a number and went into the draw to win a free Domino’s pizza. The funds raised all funnelled directly to the Eco-Centre for some new equipment!
Wednesday – Eco Kahoot
On Wednesday students participated in an eco-themed Kahoot quiz in the RIRC. It was incredibly popular and winners received an assortment of chocolates and lollies. Congratulations to everyone who competed and won!
Thursday – 10¢ Bottle Competition
During both lunchbreaks on Thursday, students were given the opportunity to test their inner trick shot skills. Mr Walsh created an excellent bottle-sized basketball hoop to fit over the top of our blue bins, and students could take their chances to win not just one red frog for their bottle, but up to four! This was incredibly popular again, and we even managed to fill an entire bin thanks to this genius endeavour.
Friday – Adopt-a-Plant & National Tree Day
And ending the week with a bang, Friday featured our Adopt-a-Plant fundraiser, in which students who had a 10c container could trade it in for a lovely plant to grow as their own. The options included snapdragon, cornflower, coriander and cherry tomatoes, and each as provided with a biodegradable pot. It was incredible how quickly stock ran out! Thank you to everyone involved. On top of this, for National Tree Day, students were provided with the opportunity to plant Australian native plants near the back of the oval to create their own legacy on the school and create a more diverse wildlife system for the future of the school.
This was such an incredible week and I can’t thank everyone who participated and facilitated these events enough. Now I know this isn’t everyone, but I would like to give a shoutout to Michelle, Will, Farxiyo, Phoenix, and Jasmann for their ongoing support. And of course, a huge shoutout to Mr Walsh for making these events possible at MGH.

CLUBS 2025

NETBALL
Recently, our school netball teams took part in the annual Indoor Netball Competition.
The 7/8, 9/10 and senior mixed teams all performed strongly, narrowly missing out on the semi-final playoffs. Their effort, teamwork and sportsmanship were outstanding and each player should be proud of their achievements.
A special congratulations goes to our Boys team, who progressed to the grand final and delivered an incredible performance against Mansfield. In a thrilling and hard-fought match, they secured victory with a final score of 19–16.
The Boys team will now go on to compete in the South East Queensland gala day on 22 August. We wish them the very best as they continue their incredible run!
Congratulations once again to all players and coaches for representing our school with pride!

HOMEWORK GUIDELINES
Homework is a very valuable part of the learning process. In the less structured environment at home, students have the opportunity through focused activities to deepen knowledge, refine a range of skills and develop their thinking processes. Homework also enables time management and organisational skills to be developed.
A teacher at a state school may require a student of the school to complete homework. The school’s Principal decides what is a reasonable amount of homework for a student at each year level. In deciding what is reasonable, the principal takes into account the following guidelines as developed for the school under Section 427(2)(f) of the Education Act.

SCHOOL-BASED YOUTH HEALTH NURSE
School Based Youth Health Nurses work in secondary schools across Queensland, with their focus being on preventative healthcare, early detection and brief intervention for all the students in Year 7 to 12.
Confidential Student Appointments
Students can make an appointment with the SBYHN in person, by emailing nurse.mtgravatt@health.qld.gov.au or via the student counter, to discuss any questions they may have about their health and wellbeing. These appointments are confidential, and the nurse will not share any information without the student’s consent, unless there is a significant risk to the student’s health or safety.
In most cases, the SBYHN encourages students to talk to their parents or carers about their health and wellbeing issues and often the nurse supports students to do this.
Individual health consultations may include:
- Early detection of actual or potential health problems.
- Providing information, options or referrals to relevant health services to provide them with further assessment, treatment and/or support.
- Provide brief interventions and/or referrals to other services as appropriate.
Some of the main issues for which students have accessed the SBYHN this year have been mental health, including social and emotional wellbeing, relationsnhips, family issues, stress, eating issues, sexual and reproductive health, drug use (including tobacco and alcohol) and growth and development.

Please encourage the young person in your care to contact the nurse if they require any information or support for any health-related issues. The SBYHN can also take referrals from teachers and parents at nurse.mtgravatt@health.qld.gov.au. Esther is available Wednesday and Thursday.

SCHOOL ZONE PARKING
Electronic Gates at Loreburn Street
The Loreburn Street entrance electronic gates are now operational. This new addition aims to provide ease of operation and assist in managing traffic within our school grounds, ultimately enhancing the safety of our students.
The decision to install an electronic gate was driven by our commitment to ensuring a secure and controlled environment for our students and staff. By allowing access to authorised vehicles only, we can effectively monitor and regulate the flow of traffic on school grounds reducing congestion and minimising potential risk to students and staff.
It is crucial for all parents, guardians, and visitors to note that all other vehicles, apart from authorised vehicles, are required to remain outside of our school grounds at all times.
We kindly request your cooperation in adhering to this policy.
Brisbane City Council's School Zone Parking Compliance Program
Parents parking illegally at school drop offs and pick-ups are on notice with Brisbane City Council
School parking is being targeted by council officers in a program designed to tackle illegal parking around schools, from blocking driveways to parking on yellow lines.
Brisbane City Council has advised that parents are not complying and are parking over driveways, on yellow lines and double parking so council officers will issue fines for illegal parking to prevent the issue affecting local residents and student safety.
Council officers will be conducting patrols around the school to ensure safe parking. Parking fines will be issued in cases where illegal parking is observed.
We would like to take this opportunity to ask parents, guardians and visitors of our school to complying with local traffic conditions and laws and respect our neighbours by not parking across driveways, or waiting in driveways.
